Education: Eton College (1970-75); Magdalen College, Oxford (BA 1st class, zoology), D Phil (zoology, 1983).

Employment: The Economist 1983-92, science correspondent, science and technology editor, Washington correspondent, American editor.

Co-founder and Chairman, International Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne (1996-2003);

Other journalism: freelance weekly columnist for Sunday Telegraph 1993-1996 and Daily Telegraph 1996-2000; articles and book reviews for The Times, Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, Literary Review, New Scientist, Prospect, New Statesman, Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Atlantic Monthly, Discover, Natural History and other publications.
